The Veendam Auditorium ..... there were 1200 passengers being looked after by 600 staff ...... this particular night, the Captain gave a formal speech to all the passengers who gathered in the ship auditorium to hear his speech.

At the end, he formally recognised the the quality of the catering staff. They all came gaily wheeling into the auditorium to see us and hear our celebrations of them. Many of them had been recruited overseas eg. Indonesia and Malaysia. To come to Alaska was a new thing for them as well.
